  Good morning, dear judges. I am candidate No. 8, applying for Junior high school English teacher.

  1. Analysis of teaching material

  The text I am going to present is An Interesting Job. It is taken from Unit 9 What does he look like? book 7A, published by PEP for junior high school students. It is a reading text introducing an exciting but sometimes difficult job of police artist which involves drawing pictures based on the description of physical appearance. The study of this text can not only help Ss review how to describe persons, but it can also make Ss aware of the importance and practical use of the ability to describe people’s physical appearance.

  According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, after studying the teaching material and analyzing the rule of students’ growing of mind, the teaching aims are set as follows:

  Teaching aims:

  1. Ss can read and understand the text introducing the job of police artist which involves describing physical appearance.

  2. Ss can distinguish and recognize the use of demonstrative pronouns with the help of the context.

  3. Ss can appreciate the importance of being able to describe physical appearances. They can also be inspired to attach more importance to inner beauty.

  Teaching key and difficult points:

  1. Ss can read and understand the reading text.

  2. They can identify the reference relationship of the demonstrative pronouns in the text according to the context.

  2. Analysis of the Students

  Though having had a solid basic knowledge of English, students in grade eight haven’t got rid of dumb English completely. Furthermore, not all of them can apply what they learn to realistic communication with others. The theme of this text is about describing other people, which is concerned about earnest observation and correct description. By active learning, independent learning and reflective learning, this text is to improve the students’ comprehensive ability of language using.

  3. Teaching and learning methods

  The new curriculum standard puts such in the first place as “cultivating students’ interest in learning English, building self-confidence, developing good habits of autonomous learning” to boost teaching and learning efficiency. Therefore, I will guide students from the following aspects.

  (1) Using question-leading method to stimulate students’ enthusiasm and interest in participating in class activities;

  (2) Using audio visual method to help students understand the words and phrases one by one. While grasping the main idea of the dialogue, students can figure out its detailed information;

  (3) Using communicative method to not only help the students make a better understanding of the dialogue by talking with others but also help to exercise their ability of language expression as well as to improve their spoken English;

  (4) Using practice-consolidation method to enable students to use what they have learned flexibly.

  Now come the most important part of my presentation- teaching procedures.

  4. Teaching Procedures

  As the old saying goes, a good beginning is half done. So is a good lead in. An effective lead-in can arouse Ss’ interest and instantly involve them in the class learning. So in the step of lead in,

  Step 1

  I will present pictures of several celebrities, such as Jobs Steve, Yao Ming, Jay Chou. Ss describe their physical appearances separately. For instance, Jobs Steve is of medium height. He has blonde hair. He wears glasses. He is a great person. He works with computer. I will introduce anther new, interesting and suitable job for you.

  Step 2 Pre-reading

  Listening

  In this part, I will create a situation and introduce the new friend Joe Brown. Ss will be asked to listen to the text and try to find out who is Joe Brown, what he does for a living, what his job is like. The purpose of designing the listening activity is to help Ss get first impression of the text. Many of them may fail to get the answers so they will be motivated to read the text eagerly.

  Step 3 While-reading

  When it comes to understanding the text and help Ss cultivate efficient reading strategies, I will instruct Ss to do skimming and scanning. First, I will ask Ss to read the first paragraph and answer the following the questions: What does Joe Brown do? What is his job like? How do you think of his job? Do you think it is a difficult one or easy one? Next, I will ask Ss to read the second paragraph and hopefully Ss can get that being a police artist is sometimes difficult and know why. Then Ss are guided to do “Read, look, and tick”. Here I will ask Ss to read the last several sentences. Then they need to look at the three pictures of different people presented on the screen and tick the real criminal according to the given description. Later, some minutes will be devoted to the learning of the pronouns. Ss circle all the pronouns that they don’t understand appearing in the text such as “he, it, him, this, they, he” and I help point out that they can identify what each pronoun refers to according to the context. Finally, I will play the tape, Ss listen and read after it to improve their pronunciation and intonation.

  Step 4 Post-reading

  Interview

  In this step, I will create a situation. Suppose you are a reporter from CCTV. You want to do a special TV program focusing on people working in the police, including the police arts. If you are the report, what will you ask? The requirement is that they both sides should use sentences to describe people. Ss work in a group of 6. One acts as the reporter, the rest act as other workers in the police. For instance, the reporter can say “Good morning, everyone. Welcome to CCTV. I am now in the police. Behind me is a tall and thin man. What do you do?... ”

  The purpose is to help them further grasp the target language and improve their language using ability.

  Step 5 Summary

  I will encourage my Ss to summarize what they have learnt from the text. They are supposed to say they learn the interesting job of police artist and how to understand the demonstrative pronouns according to the context. Meanwhile, I will remind Ss of he importance of being able to give a detailed and correct description of physical appearance. In addition, I will ask Ss the question “Do you think the good look is the most important thing?” so as to point out that we should not be over concerned about outer beauty. Instead, we should pay more attention to inner beauty. Don’t judge others by their outer look. The reason why Ss summarize by themselves is to check whether they have grasped the target language points. And the question “Do you think the good look is the most important thing?” can help fulfill the emotional aims.

  Step 6 Homework

  Ss take a picture of their friends or family members and write a description of them including the person’s physical appearance and jobs. The purpose is to enable Ss to put what they’ve learnt in class into real-life use. Meanwhile, their writing ability can be improved through writing a short passage.

  At last, I’d like to say something about my blackboard design. My blackboard writing is presented along with my class teaching. They perfectly complement each other, making it much easier for Ss to understand the key points of today’s lesson.
